Animal trash cans are designed in various styles and sizes and are made to keep animals out of the trash. In some cases they are used to prevent animals from rooting around in trash bins; in other situations they are employed to protect animals from becoming trapped within. The smallest cans are used in homes and offices to prevent rodents or insects from accessing trash. They also prevent pets from getting into the garbage and making a mess. The largest varieties are extremely sturdy and prevent access by large wild animals such as bears raccoons and other scavengers. These are usually deployed in parks national wilderness areas and campgrounds.

Discarded food and packaging offers an irresistible temptation to rats mice and other pests. Insects also are attracted to trash including flies roaches and ants. There are many types of trash cans manufactured that discourage pests by denying access to the trash within. A common design features a snug-fitting lid that is ringed with plastic to create an impermeable seal. Even the smallest insect cannot get inside when the lid is tightly closed. Human access is facilitated by a foot pedal so the lid does not need to be touched every time you want to discard a piece of trash. The pedal is very popular for many people because it allows them to avoid germs and bacteria that develop in trash.

Even those who have no pest problems may choose to use animal-proof bins. The airtight seal helps control odors and keeps the trash unavailable to household pets that often think garbage bins are provided for their benefit and amusement.

The largest types of container designed to deny access to large animals are sometimes refereed to as bear bins or bear-resistant containers. Bears are the largest scavengers attracted to human trash in parks and wilderness areas. They are also very powerful and determined animals and are attracted to areas where humans discard food waste. When bears find a source of food they can become a major problem. When bears lose their fear of humans and understand how to find food they will break into tents campers and cars to scavenge. It is up to individual campers to protect their food supply. But bear bins can protect trash from the ministrations of animal scavengers. These containers are often molded from industrial-strength plastic and placed within a special enclosure that can be accessed only through a window that is kept securely latched. These special enclosures can hold several bins for trash or a combination of trash and recycling bins.

Campgrounds and parks use these products extensively but private property owners often choose them when they have wooded acreage nearby. Rural areas see a variety of wildlife intent on rummaging through human waste including bears raccoons and cougars. When animals cannot access trash they get discouraged and move on to another area. Animal-resistant garbage receptacles provide protection for your property by discouraging wildlife from accessing your trash.
